So you have decided you’d like to live in Spain, but you’re not coming to retire and you need income? One of most common things that holds back a move to Spain is employment, or fear of not getting a job in Spain. The thought of selling up in the UK or buying a property in Spain before a job is secured s naturally quite a scary one to say the least.
The hard truth
Unless you are very lucky, have great connections in Spain or both, it is going to be difficult to get anyone to take you seriously until you are firmly in living here in Spain. For every one person who actually makes the move the Spain, there are thousands who are thinking about, dreaming of, or currently looking to move here. Many of the people in this group are also waiting to find a job before they move. Potential employers are generally only ever going to offer jobs to those who are already in place. And there are plenty of people in place and ready to work in Spain.
Turn the current economic situation to your advantage
You don’t need me to tell you that finding a suitable job anywhere at the moment could take time. Have you ever though about buying that time with your move to Spain. Think about how much you income you would need over say,the next 6 months. If you could secure that income when you buy your home in Spain, you could be here a lot sooner than you thought.
This is how it could be done. There are a number of completed properties in some great locations in Spain, and in particular around Alicante that have huge reductions on them. The reductions are offered because a completed, unsold property costs the developer a lot of money to stay empty. The builder may have a mortgage too, making it even more important that property is sold as quickly as possible. This is where you can turn the market in your favour, both in the property you buy and in the income you will need to live on. It is possible (although it has t be said not on every property) to negotiate a big discount off the price or a cash-back on completion. There is probably a fairly small window of opportunity for this though. As the stock of key ready new reduces, so do the big discounts.
Once you have your property, and you’ve saved enough on the purchase price to keep you going for your initial months in Spain, you can take your time t find the right job. Maybe you can use the time you have bought to start the business you have always wanted to. What ever you do, you will be in one the most inspiring places you could imagine and don’t forget you already have at least one friend in Spain!
